How Knowing Who You Are Changes Everything

I’ve been traveling abroad for the past week with new friends. At the start of our joint adventure, we did not know each other very well. It could have gone horribly wrong. In fact, on the journey, several things did go wrong, including engine trouble, delays and lost baggage. Not fun when you’re half way around the world. An unexpected test of character.

They handled every drama with even tempers and equanimity. In my eyes, they moved from simply charming and pleasant, to people I’d want by my side in any crisis.

On the last night of our time together, I was struck by part of our conversation that is not mine to share. However, I can tell you the unspoken elements I heard deep beneath the actual words uttered.

“We know who we are. We know what our dreams are. We have a shared vision. We are in this together as true partners, grounded, secure, absolutely authentic, true.”

It made my heart sing. Meeting people with that kind of self knowledge and awareness is a rare gift. When you know who you are, when values and behavior line up, that’s where the magic happens. I saw it in action last week, and it’s a beautiful thing.
