When Dreams Become Reality

I had a dream a few years back. A dream of connecting with others around the world, a dream of writing and engaging in rich dialogue that led to action and change. I wrote an essay about that dream for Whitney Johnson, then an acquaintance, now a friend. Today a few of my words are part of her book, Dare, Dream, Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream. They were written at the early stages of this dream. What is shocking and also wonderful about them, is not the thrill of seeing them in print (though I’m not going to lie – that’s quite lovely!). It’s the calm reflection of everything that has happened in the few years since I dared that particular dream.

The fruits of my dreaming have been the expansion and growth of my relationships. How I’ve developed and changed within my marriage. How I’ve grown as a mother.  The incredible people I’ve met through writing and public speaking and in my online life  — people who have forever shifted my world view.

Whitney and I spent several months as part of a Master coaching class. Four of us and our amazing coaches, would get on the phone one night a week for an hour and share projects, negotiations, impasses, obstacles and always, always, circle back to our dreams. Through that group, in a moment of utter clarity, my blog and eventual book When You Wake Up a Mother was born. A new dream to stand up for mothers and babies around the world was birthed at the same time, which is now reflected in my work as Community Manager for the UN Foundation’s Million Moms Challenge.

Finding a framework to deliver online coaching for women navigating life’s core issues around balance, money, wellness and productivity also emerged from that group, as I partner with the brilliant minds of the coaches of The Daily Thrive.

What’s evident to me is that the best dreaming doesn’t happen in isolation. When we declare our dreams out loud, with witnesses, fans and cheerleaders, those declarations carry us forward into action.

So what are you dreaming about today, who will you share it with and when will you get into action?
